We had a great second week! We learned a huge word: Metacognition! This means thinking about our thinking. (Ask your child what big word they learned and what it means, if they are having a hard time remembering, say "It begins with Met...." When we read stories we use metacognition to help us understand it. We use the following words: Wondering, Connecting, Picturing, Predicting and Figuring Out. When you are reading to your child try using these terms every few pages to help them understand the story. Always use the word in your sentence when modeling it, and ensure that your child is using the word as well. EX:I am connecting when Pete the Cat's shoes got dirty to when I stepped in the mud puddle. I am picturing when we went out and collected strawberries. I am wondering what color Pete's new shoes will be on the next page. I am predicting Pete will step in something on the next page.
We did a few assessments this week. They are beginning of the year assessments meant for gathering data. They will not be sent home. We will begin our curriculum learning Monday!
Thank you to everyone who signed up for Class DOJO! It is a fabulous learning tool. Email me with your phone number if you have not received the invitation yet. gclair@soaracademies.org.
Homework at this time is to read at least 20 minutes a night. At this age is is very important to be reading with your child every day. If you are in need of books, I have plenty, I can check out books to you on a weekly basis. Let me know via Class DOJO.
Have a great rest of the weekend!
